Rome, Rome, Rome, Rome

Who settled Rome?
Etruscans
  •  Came from north-central part of the peninsula
  •  metalworkers, artists, architects
two foundation myths:
  •  Virgil's Aeneid; (where Aeneas escapes from Troy)
  •  the story of Remus and Romulus Greeks
Greeks
  •  they had many colonies around the Mediterranean sea
  • Romans borrowed ideas from them, such as
                    - religious beliefs
                    - alphabet
                    - much of their art
                    - military techniques

But who first settled there?
the Latins!
  •  descendants of Indo-Europeans
  •  settled on the banks of the Tiber
  •  situated so trading ships-but not war fleets- could navigate as far as Rome, but no further
  •  commercial port, but not susceptible to attack
  •  and... built on seven hills (esp. Palatine)
…they drained a swamp...
  •  many streams flowed into the Tiber
  •  there was a marshy area called the Forum, between Palatine and Capitoline Hills
  •  Tarquin the Proud's grandfather built the Cloaca maxima (largest ancient drain) which channeled water into the Tiber
Now Tarquin's Kinda proud, but he got a little too loud
  •  Lucius Tarquinias Superbus
  • the seventh and final king of Rome
  •  Known as Tarquin the Proud (sometimes referred to as Tarquin the Arrogant)
  •  a true tyrant in the old and modern sense of the world

The transition from regular school, where we have our teachers right next to us if we have any problems and having traditional tests and classwork to not having any hands on help and everything online has been a big change. I am someone who always needs reassurance if I am doing something right, so not having my teacher there to make sure I'm doing the assignment right has been a struggle for me. I have emailed my teachers for help, but it has never seemed to help. Sometimes the workload can be more then we normally do in school or it just feels like more to me because we are at home, but I know that the teachers are under a lot of stress and they are doing the best the can to keep up with grading and posting assignments every morning. Integrity is something that we all need to maintain doing this time because we should all be treating it like regular school, even though sometimes it can be tempting to cheat. I am hoping that this can come to an end soon, so we can return to school...

western civ day 1

Today in class Mr. Schick gave us assigned seats and explained how this semester is going to work. He talked about how we are going to take notes the traditional way, in a notebook. Mr. Schick doesn't like students taking notes on the computer because he believes they are a distraction and writing notes by hand helps you to better remember the material. He said that we could only use a composition books because they are more durable and won't get destroyed like a spiral notebook would. Mr. Schick also explained that our blog post has to be 150-200 words and we can word it in whatever way makes sense to us. The reason we just don't turn in our notebooks is because looking at the information and writing it again helps us retain it, this will help us for tests and quizzes. We are also going to be using a textbook, this is different from Human Geography because we did not have a textbook for that course. The textbook is going to stay at school under our desks until we need them...

My essay question is going to be Describe the importance of the Parthenon. In the first paragraph I am going to talk about why it is one of the most influential buildings in Greek history. In the next paragraph I am going to talk about where it is located and why it is located there. In the paragraph I am going to talk about who the Parthenon is dedicated to and why it was built. Lastly, I will talk about why it is a known symbol in history.
